The ocean has no voice in politics.
It cannot vote.
It cannot lobby.
It cannot protest.
But we can—and at Coastal Renewal, we do.
While removing debris and educating communities are vital parts of our mission, true, lasting change only happens when policy reflects the urgency of the crisis. That’s why we fight not only in the water, but also in the legislative halls, courtrooms, and streets.
Ocean conservation is not just an environmental issue—it’s a political one. And if we want to protect marine life and stop the cycle of pollution, we must confront the systems that allow it to continue.
For decades, ocean dumping—both legal and illegal—has been quietly destroying marine ecosystems. Industries have used the ocean as a convenient dumping ground for plastics, toxic waste, oil, untreated sewage, and agricultural runoff.
Even with global treaties and national regulations in place, enforcement is often weak, loopholes remain, and penalties for pollution are far too lenient.
That’s where Coastal Renewal steps in.
We work to:
Advocate for stronger legislation banning ocean dumping and tightening environmental protection laws
Lobby for stricter penalties on corporations that violate marine pollution regulations
Demand full transparency and public accountability from government agencies and industries that impact the ocean
Support international agreements that align with sustainable marine governance
Coastal Renewal regularly collaborates with lawmakers, scientists, and environmental lawyers to craft and support ocean-forward legislation. We provide expert-backed policy recommendations, deliver testimony in hearings, and build coalitions that bring the voice of the ocean into political conversations.
Some of our most successful efforts include:
Backing state and local bans on single-use plastics and expanded polystyrene
Helping draft “Zero Waste to Sea” resolutions adopted by coastal municipalities
Petitioning for federal-level protections for endangered marine species
Pushing for expanded Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in vulnerable habitats
Our policy team works behind the scenes, but their impact ripples across coasts and countries.
When quiet advocacy isn’t enough, we make noise.
Coastal Renewal organizes peaceful protests, rallies, and direct actions that draw attention to ocean pollution, industrial dumping, and regulatory failures. Our goal is always to remain lawful, inclusive, and effective—using people power to send a clear message: the ocean is not a landfill.
Our protests have included:
“Lines in the Sand” human chains along polluted beaches to symbolize rising resistance
Public flotillas where kayakers and paddleboarders rally offshore near threatened marine areas
Demonstrations outside corporate headquarters of companies known to be major ocean polluters
Global cleanup strikes, where volunteers stop their work for one day to protest inaction from leaders
Each action is backed by a focused message, supported by data, and connected to a clear policy demand. We don’t just protest—we propose solutions.
We believe the most powerful change comes when communities rise together. That’s why we work hard to mobilize grassroots support through:
Petitions and signature drives targeting lawmakers and regulators
Digital campaigns on social media to raise awareness and build pressure
Community organizing workshops that empower local leaders to take action
Youth advocacy programs that train the next generation of ocean activists
We’ve seen firsthand how a protest of 100 can become a petition of 10,000—how one voice shouting “Enough!” can echo into policy reform.
Beyond laws, protests, and education, we believe in accountability. Coastal Renewal supports legal efforts to expose and penalize corporations and municipalities that break environmental laws. We work with investigative journalists, citizen scientists, and environmental watchdogs to uncover:
Illegal offshore dumping operations
Waste mismanagement by ports, factories, and shipping companies
Violations of the Clean Water Act and Marine Protection laws
We don’t just clean up the mess—we go after those making it.
The ocean gives us life, and now it needs our voice.
At Coastal Renewal, we’ll continue to fight pollution, push for better laws, and rally communities until our seas are clean, our marine life is protected, and ocean dumping is a relic of the past.
We need you with us.
